US OPEN Un-Regatta, 15-16 August 09

US OPEN Un-Regatta, 15-16 August 09

Kids called it "the funniest event I've ever done! ".

The U.S. O'Pen Cup "Un-Regatta" soared to new heights at New Bedford Community Boating as fifty kids packed in ten heats, tandem freestyle, and the Black Dog GPS Speed Test. Giant slalom, "O'Pen Cross", and compulsory manoeuvers challenged the O'Pen BIC sailors.

The event started with an introduction and description of the unorthodox "Un-Regatta" format that emphasizes fun over results. Some of the participants were seasoned Opti and 420 sailors, while others had never raced before. The format was fast paced, but did not follow strict rules, and the kids loved it. Although there was excellent racing, removing the win-at-all-costs atmosphere made it fun for parents, team leaders, and kids alike. For some kids, the freestyle was the funniest part. For others it was the wild courses and required moves. And for some it was the high-speed courses and just the camaraderie in the relaxed atmosphere.

As one parent described it, "This was one part sailing, one part motocross, and one part snowboarding. My son had the time of his life."
